This series consists of child welfare placement case files. The records provide information on Indian children from the Tomah Indian School and Agency who were placed in boarding homes or foster homes. The records include letters received and copies of letters sent. The correspondents include Wisconsin state welfare officials. The records also include applications for boarding schools; certifications of degree of Indian blood; physical examination forms; case histories; and summary evaluations of Federal boarding homes and foster homes. Each case file includes a data sheet on the individual child. The information provided on the data sheet includes the date of birth; the grade in school; the degree of Indian blood; the name of the child's home agency; the name of the child's parent or guardian; the total amount spent on the child's boarding per month; remarks; the child's achievements in school; the child's health; the amount of any earnings; the child's personal character; and the family situation.

The Tomah Indian School was authorized as a nonreservation boarding school in 1891 and opened in 1893. The Tomah Indian School was given agency duties in 1911 for the Hocak (Winnebago) Indians of Wisconsin. Agency duties were transferred to the Grand Rapids Agency in 1916, but in 1927 that agency-level jurisdiction was consolidated with the Tomah School, which regained its agency status.
